Savannah City Hall Restoration

Savannah City Hall www.VisitSavannah.comThe Project

The Savannah City Hall was designed and built by local architect Hyman Wallace Witcover in 1904 – 1905. The structure is a Renaissance Revival building with classic proportions and detailing.

In 2006, city architect Perdue recognized that the building was in need of extensive restoration. The cupola walls leaked, the granite on the exterior of the building was crumbling and the gold leaf on the dome was disappearing.

While not able to convince the city to restore the building interior, Perdue was allowed to engage quality contractors to restore the exterior of the building to its original design.

L.E. Schwartz and Son, Inc. was selected to replace the cupola on top of the dome and install new membrane roofing along with new copper gutters, downspouts and other ornamental flashing details.

L.E. Schwartz started by removing the entire cupola from the building and transported it back to their manufacturing facility in Macon, GA. The century old cupola had to be disassembled so that an exact replica could be designed, engineered and manufactured. Because there was no way to safely access the flag and flag pole on top of the cupola, the new design included a platform and ladder.

Once complete, the cupola was transported back to Savannah and slowly set in place by a large crane.

The “new” City Hall exterior will allow the building to remain an enduring landmark for the City of Savannah.
